Using Windows VM in Linux

i3wm

In Linux Mint i3wm, first build a Windows vm in VirtualBox.

Then get the UUID of the guest OS with:

$ VBoxManage list vms
"Win7Office" {35cd049b-7242-4db4-8329-2eb05149f5cf}
...

The UUID will be used to start the vm with script. Save the following line in /usr/local/bin/win7:

VBoxManage startvm 35cd049b-7242-4db4-8329-2eb05149f5cf --type gui

Add executing permission: sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/win7;

Now start Windows vm with dmenu: alt-d -> win7.

Make the vm full screen: press "Home" key, (here is right ctrl key), followed by alt-f.

To leave the guest system to the #2 workspace: right ctrl, alt-2.

In Ubuntu Unity desktop environment it's almost the same with that in i3wm, but use alt-f2 instead of alt-d to run the script. Use alt-tab instead of alt-2 to leave the Windows vm.

Ubuntu Unity

In System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts, add a new Custom Shortcuts:

  • Name: startWin10
  • Command: VBoxManage startvm f65b33af-ffd7-41ac-bac4-228256cb51a1 --type gui
  • Shortcut: Alt-Shift-F7
